SWBNO Optimizes Algier’s Water Treatment Plant Process
For Immediate Release: Tuesday, June 2, 2026 2:53 PM
New Orleans, LA - Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) is excited to announce that in June 2026, our Algiers Water Treatment Plant will begin using zinc orthophosphate, a food-grade additive, to enhance current corrosion control processes in compliance with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH).
Zinc orthophosphate is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is used in water systems around the world for corrosion control. The additive forms a protective layer inside of pipes to prevent corrosion and is expected to enhance how we control lead in any pipes outside of our water plant. There is no detectable lead in the water that leaves our treatment plants; however, lead can enter drinking water through lead pipes and fixtures in plumbing.
As a drinking water agency committed to public health, SWBNO recognizes the risk lead can present to our customers. We are committed to removing all lead service lines through a multi-year replacement program and to reduce lead levels in the current system by adding zinc orthophosphate. In addition to reducing lead levels, this additive will provide additional corrosion protection for metals in the event of another saltwater intrusion event.
Providing safe and quality drinking water is our top priority. We are improving processes and enhancing operations to improve our water quality in accordance with our Water Quality Master Plan. Learn more about our current water treatment process with this informational video and on our website.
