BACKGROUND:

SWBNO’s new Power Complex is among the most consequential undertakings of its kind realized in the City of New Orleans in more than a century. The Power Complex’s electric generation signals a modern era of pumping power in the city after relying on aging, in-house turbines to power New Orleans’ legacy drainage pumps.

This power generation evolution marks the end of an antiquated time and the beginning of a contemporary, stable power system that will bring peace of mind to residents during rain events. The Power Complex connects directly to Entergy’s power grid and converts modern electricity into the 25-Hz power that SWBNO’s legacy pumps still use. The Power Complex also comprises new modern turbines, allowing for redundancy in the event the Entergy grid trips offline. Now, with more reliable and efficient power generation capabilities, SWBNO can retire its century-old turbine, Turbine 4—a remarkable milestone in the utility’s power modernization journey.
