SWBNO Issues Voluntary Water Conservation Notice for All Customers

For Immediate Release: Monday, January 20, 2025 8:53 AM

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) is urging all residents and commercial customers to conserve water due to impacts at the Claiborne Avenue Pump Station caused by winter weather conditions.

This morning (January 20), drinking water pumps at the Claiborne Avenue station went offline, leading to a drop in pressure across the system. While SWBNO’s other two drinking water pumping stations remain operational, crews are actively working to restore full capacity. Drinking water is still safe at this time.

To help mitigate the issue, SWBNO asks customers to reduce water usage, including taking shorter showers and avoiding the use of appliances like washing machines and dishwashers. Commercial customers are encouraged to minimize water consumption for non-essential business purposes, such irrigation and non-critical cleaning.

Customers should continue dripping their faucets when temperatures drop below 32 degrees to prevent water freezing in their pipes. Run the faucet farthest from your meter at no more than a trickle of water, about as thin as a standard strand of spaghetti.

Updates will be provided through the SWBNO website, and in coordination with the City of New Orleans, the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, and NolaReady. For the latest information, customers are encouraged to stay tuned to official communications from these sources.
