Sewerage and Water Board Provides Update on Power Status, Looks Ahead to Future

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, March 17, 2021 12:47 PM

New Orleans – Today, March 17, 2021, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) held its monthly Board meeting and delivered a comprehensive update on the status of the agency’s power generation system and provided a lookahead to the future.

“As we enter into our rainy season, we are committed to remaining transparent with our residents on where we stand,” said Ghassan Korban, Executive Director, Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans. “Currently, there is very little power redundancy in our system. Our projected timeline is on track for T4 and T5 to be available for the beginning of this year’s hurricane season, but we are not stopping there. We are now executing a plan that will create a much more stable future for this utility. While we are currently in a very fragile state, we are making active decisions that will have a positive impact on this agency for generations to come.”

Below are highlights on progress with the SWBNO Power Program as well as an overview of the current and future state of power:

  • Today: Turbines 1 and 6 are available for use, leaving us with little backup power to operate our system.
  • In two months:  Turbines 4 and 5 will back in service before hurricane season
  • In two years: We will have a dedicated Entergy substation located at our Carrollton Water Plant as well as a new turbine
