NEW ORLEANS – Effective immediately, both southbound lanes of Canal Boulevard between Jewel Street and Amethyst Street are closed due to a utility failure. The Sewerage and Water Board and the Department of Public Works are working closely to determine the safest and most efficient path forward.

Public safety is the city’s priority; commuters are asked to allow for additional travel time and to be mindful of workers in this area. The closure will be in effect until the utility and pavement repairs can be completed.

Northbound drivers should detour westbound at Jewel Street to northbound Onyx Street, then head eastbound on Amethyst to get around the closure. Southbound drivers will detour eastbound on Amethyst, then southbound on Sardonyx Street and westbound on Jewel.  Only residents of the 7500 block of Canal Boulevard will be allowed access.
