SWBNO Provides Update on Leonidas, Panola Streets 40 Inch Water Main Break

For Immediate Release: Monday, January 7, 2019 11:56 AM

NEW ORLEANS – On Friday, January 4, 2019, Sewerage and Water Board (SWBNO) and its contractor, Wallace. C. Drennan Inc., conducted an emergency repair to a break in a 48-inch diameter water main at the intersection of Leonidas and Panola streets in Uptown.

Repairs continued Monday, Jan. 7, as crews worked to replace an entire section of the main. The work, which involves a more extensive, but ultimately more permanent, restoration, is expected to be completed by Wednesday.

Prior to Friday’s emergency, the SWBNO team was aware of a leak at that site, and had been preparing a proper course of action when the main broke. Because of that preparation, which included rerouting the distribution of water away from that site, no customers lost water service. We thank residents of the Carrollton area and across New Orleans for their patience as we work to repair the water main.

Repairs at that site continue with crews working to replace a full section of the damaged cast-iron pipe, which was installed in 1908. This break was unfortunate, but it demonstrates the critical need to update and improve New Orleans’ infrastructure so that SWBNO can continue its mission to keep residents safe and healthy.
