UPDATE on Water Main Repair at General Ogden and Nelson causing Lower-Than-Normal Pressure

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, February 22, 2022 4:54 PM

Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) crews and contractors continue to work on a critical repair to a broken valve on a 50” water main near General Ogden and Nelson Streets.

Crews are now welding a new section of the 50” main in place, which supplements the water supply to Mid-City, Lakeview, Gentilly, and New Orleans East.

Crews are expecting to complete the repair by midnight. Customers who are experiencing lower-than-normal water pressure will see their water pressure rise after the repair is completed.

Residents and visitors using water on upper floors of multi-story buildings have a high potential of lower-than-normal water pressure. Crews are working around the clock to complete the repair.

There is currently a precautionary boil water advisory in effect for parts of New Orleans, including Gentilly and parts of New Orleans East because water pressure dipped below 20 psi in these areas during the course of the repair. Water quality sampling and testing will not begin until the repair on the 50" water main is complete.

A map of the affected areas can be found here: https://swbno.org/News/BoilWater

Customers in other areas of the city are not affected by the advisory and do not need to boil their water.

Crews have been monitoring water pressure throughout the repair, and while some areas are experiencing lower-than-normal pressure, the areas outside the precautionary advisory have remained above 20 psi.

SWBNO will notify residents when the precautionary boil water advisory is canceled or if another is needed.
