KIND OF WORK:
Intermediate professional civil engineering work in the research, design and construction of engineering projects; and related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK:
Employees in this class receive advanced practical training in the application of civil engineering knowledge and skill to engineering projects. Work includes assisting in the construction and inspection of large, complex projects in the field or in the research and design of such projects in the office.
As experience is gained, employees are expected to work with increasing independence in planning work details and in making routine technical decisions. Work is supervised by standard checks by another engineer or by the final review of a superior.
This class differs from that of Civil Engineer by the degree of supervision and training received and the difficulty of the engineering tasks assigned. While in this class, an individual completes the necessary requirements for professional registration.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Prepares plans, specifications and estimates for construction projects.
Reviews plans and specifications by consulting engineers for accuracy and completeness.
Inspects jobs under construction for quality of materials, workmanship and compliance with plans and specifications.
Performs moderately difficult engineering calculations.
Plans, assigns and supervises the work of a small group of subprofessional engineering assistants.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering.
Good knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of public works.
Skill in making engineering computations, in designing engineering projects, and in making engineering plans and specifications.
Skill in conducting engineering research work, and in writing technical reports on such subjects.
Ability to supervise and inspect the work of contractors on engineering projects, and to enforce adherence to plans and specifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EITHER: Permanent status with the City of New Orleans or the Sewerage and Water Board as an Engineer Intern I (formerly Engineer-In-Training I) and eighteen (18) months of experience as an Engineer Intern I.
OR: Possession of a certificate from the Louisiana State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors stating that the applicant has been certified and enrolled as an Engineer Intern* and eighteen (18) months of engineering experience following EIT Certification.
IMPORTANT: Out-of-State registrations are acceptable. However, any applicant who is not registered as an Engineer Intern in Louisiana must, if hired, show proof of such registration during his or her probationary period. No person may receive permanent status until this requirement has been met, and no probationary period may extend longer than one (1) year.
Field work may be required for some engineering positions. Employees may be required to have automobiles for some positions. An automobile allowance is usually granted when this is a requirement.

KIND OF EXAM:
A qualifying review of education and certification.
This is a non-competitive original entrance examination in accordance with Rule V, Section 8.1 (b) of the City Civil Service Rules.
