New Orleans - The Sewerage & Water Board stopped a large water leak Monday evening after a private contractor at the Audubon Louisiana Nature Center in New Orleans East caused a major main break.

A call came in around 6:15 p.m. that an 8-inch water main had been struck at the Nature Center. An S&WB emergency crew stopped the leak in less than two hours, shutting off the water to keep it from flooding into adjacent Joe W. Brown Park.

Joe Brown Park was closed Tuesday due to low water pressure. The restrooms at the Nature Center were also closed Tuesday. Residents can call 52-WATER to report any water outages.

The S&WB's emergency contractor, Wallace C. Drennan Inc., has taken over the repairs from the S&WB. The work is expected to be completed Tuesday.

The Sewerage & Water Board prides itself on its ability to respond swiftly to such emergencies, even with its current manpower shortages. The agency's work crews routinely repair more than 600 leaks, big and small, every week across New Orleans.

“This is a great example of the often unsung work Sewerage & Water Board crews do day in and day out,” said Marcie Edwards, Interim Executive Director of the Sewerage & Water Board.
