Kind of Work

This is an intermediate training level maintenance position at Sewerage & Water Board's Facilities Maintenance Division. An individual performs a variety of unskilled construction, maintenance and repair tasks.  Work also includes assisting journey level Utilities Trade Technicians and Specialists in performing the manual tasks related to their work and learning to use a variety of hand and power tools; and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid driver's license. *

AND EITHER:    
Permanent status with the City of New Orleans and one (1) year of maintenance experience at or above the level of Laborer.  
 
Or:  One (1) year of experience in construction or building maintenance.
 
Or:  Successful Completion of OSHA 10 Hour Certification of General Industry Safety Training** and NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) Core Curriculum***.
 
Or:  Successful Completion of a trade related construction or trade education program
which must have included at least 90 contact hours. Civil Service reserves the right to determine relatedness.                                                                            
  
** OSHA 10-hour training is the primary method used to train workers on hazard recognition and OSHA safety standards. The training covers specific OSHA regulations and requirements as they apply to the construction industry.

*** The NCCER Core Curriculum covers topics such as Basic Safety, Communication Skills and Introduction to Construction Drawings.  Completing this curriculum gives the trainee the basic skills needed to continue education in any craft area.

* Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify valid Louisiana driver's license and any certificates claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.

Kind of Examination

A qualifying written test and a rating of training and experience, weighted 100%.  All related previous experience will be considered for qualification purposes; however, credit on the rating of training and experience will only be given for experience gained within the last ten (10) years.
 
The qualifying written examination is designed to measure mechanical aptitude.
