  background Excess Sewerage Strength Surcharge

In addition to the preceding water and sewerage charges, customers whose sewage effluent exceeds normal limitations are separately billed monthly according to the following formula:
Sewerage Rate increase effective July 1, 2006.

Excess Sewerage Formula

Charge = (V * W) * ( (BC * (BOD - BA) ) + (SC * (SS - SA) ) )
V = Sewerage Volume
W = Weight ( 8.34 pounds per gallon )
BC = Bio Oxygen Demand unit charge ( $ 0.2619 per pound)
BOD = Bio Oxygen Demand strength index in milligrams per liter
BA = Bio Oxygen Demand allowed ( 285 milligrams per liter )
SC = Suspended Solids unit charge ( $ 0.1494 per pound)
SS = Suspended Solids strength index in milligrams per liter
SA = Suspended Solids allowed ( 395 milligrams per liter )

Volume Calculation

V= ( Billed + Well ) * Percent
V = Sewerage Volume
Billed = Water volume billed by the S&WB
Well = Water volume from wells or other sources not billed by the S&WB
Percent = Percentage of water volume that is not returned to the sewer system

The Bio Oxygen Demand, Suspended Solids, Well Water, and Percent are measured at individual locations. The Sewerage and Water Board's Environmental Affairs Unit conducts the tests for each sewer connection.
